MONSTER MAGNET.

I've always thought the term "stoner rock" sucked.
Most stoner rock bands can't write a riff to save their lives, or they think that it all starts and ends with Kyuss.
Thankfully, Monster Magnet is NOT a stoner rock band. Close at times, but NOT stoner rock in my opinion.

I've also always thought that Monster Magnet were a great band, but wondered why Dave Wyndorf couldn't check his drugs/ego long enough to write another "great" record after "Dopes To Infinity".

This time he has.

While I like bits and pieces of each M.M. record since "Dopes", this one is the first record since then that sounds consistent to me - I only "don't like" 1 1/2 songs on it.

Great driving record...

Now playing:
Die Kreuzen - Among The Ruins
via FoxyTunes

DARKTHRONE.

I'm sure there's a ton of D.T. haters out there, saying "they aren't kvlt enough any more" or whatever - fuck that shit anyways.
I DIG the muddy blackened punk-scuzz metal they did on their last record and this one is EVEN BETTER!

Now playing:
Jonathan Bepler - Rough Ashler
via FoxyTunes

ANIMOSITY.

I've seen these dudes a bunch of times over the last few years, and while I don't think that any one of them is 25 years of age yet, they possess the chops of seasoned vets many years their elder.

THIS RECORD IS EXTREMELY BRUTAL (as the kids like to say)...

COWS.

I've had a love / hate relationship with these guys over the years, but nowadays when I listen to them WITH MY EARS I realize just how amazingly fucked-up and GOOD they really were.

Won't be another band like this, I'm sure of that.

INFEST.

Woweee!
There hasn't been another band quite like this since...
I sure loves me some POWERVIOLENCE.

DISSECTION.

Don't you just love it when you're going through your music collection and you find a "long lost album"? One that makes you go, "How the fuck did I forget about THIS!?!"

Dissection is one of those bands that did what sooo many "kvlt" black metal motherfuckers T-R-Y to do...

I miss this band.

Re-Up(s): DEAD ELEPHANT / D.R.I. / ASSCHAPEL / LAUGHING HYENAS.

By request(s), I've re-upped the following posts:

Dead Elephant.
D.R.I.
Asschapel.
Laughing Hyenas.

(I'd post something new, but I think I'm catching a fucking cold and I'm calling it an early night, sorry)...

Re-Up: JERRY'S KIDS.

Just a note to let you know that the Jerry's Kids posting has been re-upped to MediaFire.
I'd like to find the time to migrate all the early posts to MediaFire, but for the meantime I'll be re-upping by request.

Thanks as always for stopping by, leave a comment if you download, and support the artist by buying product from them whenever possible - fuck using Amazon.com, etc.

Now playing:
Killdozer - River
via FoxyTunes

COLDWORKER.

From the ashes of the legendary Nasum comes Coldworker.
While it may not be grinding all the time, it still has that manic element at the forefront but with some metalcore/death metal brutality added to the mix.
A rather enjoyable listen...

D/L Coldworker - The Contaminated Void right here.

Now playing:
Killdozer - Don't Cry
via FoxyTunes

MAR de GRISES.

Here's a rad Chilean band that does that heavy/death/atmospheric doom shit well.
A real standout in a (rad) genre saturated with mediocre bands...

CAUSTIC RESIN.

Did a Treepeople post not too long ago - here's an offshoot of that band (sorta), the mighty Caustic Resin. Brett Netson is a waaaay underrated guitar-slinger for sure, busting out with some dirty hot-shit sludge-heavy blues/rock riffage.
Not sure if this band is still alive or not - hope it ain't over yet!

(Don't let the word "blues" scare you away as these guys make records that are perfect for that late night long drive home)...

I don't usually post YouTube videos, but I dig this one...

Now playing:

Possessed - Burning in Hell
via FoxyTunes

CURSED.

Can't tell you how much this band has reaffirmed to me that hardcore is actually not dead (or in the mall) but alive and well in Toronto, Ontario. There's some good (contmeporary) hardcore bands out there, and then there's CURSED...

( I tossed in a bonus track that I downloaded off the Cursed website years ago)...

Gary Numan - You Are In MyVision
via FoxyTunes

9.23.2007

GARGANTULA.

Totally punishing Nor-Cal "space heshers" who formed from the ashes of BL'AST & Spaceboy, these dudes are long overdue for some new material.
In the meantime get familiar with this...

Now playing:
Pg. 99 - Goodbye, Face
via FoxyTunes

CODE OF HONOR.

One of my personal favorites as far as early S.F. hardcore goes, C.o.H. created thrashy/melodic skate rock with a political bent.
Glad to see this collection come out last year as it was long overdue!

PINK TURDS IN SPACE.

Chaotic Belfast, Ireland anarcho/crust that I'm thinking alot of folks may have not heard, at least here in the U.S. One of my favorite CDs of the genre for sure.
Hard to find much info on these dudes...

Now playing:
Tyler Bates - Road Kill
via FoxyTunes

KINGFACE.

Unsung Washington DC band that never really got the credit they deserve, possibly because they didn't fit the Dischord HC mold. Great songwriting with a no-frills straight-up rock style, these dudes and Only Living Witness give me the same feeling when I listen to them - good stuff...

D/L Kingface - 9:30 Club, Washington D.C. 1988 right here.

Now playing:
Only Living Witness - Voice Of Disrepair
via FoxyTunes

9.20.2007

WETNURSE.

Crazed NYC juggernaut of tech/sludge/metal/core (or something like that).
Hope they get their shit together and make a new record; this one cooks!

UPDATE 11.09.2008: They did make a new record, and it sucks. Damn.

Now playing:
Dr. Dooom - Neighbors Next Door
via FoxyTunes

THE DYING LIGHT.

Insanely kick-ass tech/death metal from Staten Island, NY.
Why these guys aren't bigger is a mystery of to me - oh wait - they don't wear eyeliner or women's jeans...

LINKS -
DoucheSpace.
Metal Archives.

D/L The Dying Light - The Killing Plan right here.

9.18.2007

POISON IDEA.

I can easily call these guys one of my all-time favorite bands.
There's a few young bands that slightly conjure up what these guys could do in their heyday(s), but their can only be one King(s) of Punk...

LINKS -

D/L Poison Idea - Feel The Darkness right here.

Now playing:
Hellchild - Wings Of Hope
via FoxyTunes

TREEPEOPLE.

The best band from Seattle (sorta) that never fit into the whole grunge-thing.
This band still stands the test of time in my opinion as far as writing big, fat hooks that don't sound rehashed or - even worse - "pussy".
Even better is the fact that this band originated in that "hotbed of rock-and-roll" Boise fucking Idaho...

Hellchild - Sea, the Blue

LUDDITE CLONE.

Can't really call these guys metalcore or noisecore or grindcore, but they did represent a wonderful amalgamation of each said genre, and they did it better than most. And much like this record, it seems like it/they ended before it/they even began.

Fucking awesome.

Now playing:

Nappytyme Junction - March of the Thunder Knomes

FIGURE OF MERIT.

Minneapolis-styled heavy noise/core.
Good, tight riffing, a bit of the chunka-chunka, and damn if I ain't hearing a touch of the legendary Coalesce in there as well?
I feel like these guys still haven't completely tapped into their full power yet, hope to hear more from them...

LO-RES VISCERA IS OFF.

For the weekend. No new posts until Sunday night...

9.13.2007

STINKING LIZAVETA.

Crazy ass three-piece instrumental doom/jazz/metal from Phladelphia PA.
With a mojo (not so much in sound, but in "feel") akin to the infamous Dead Moon, they transcend being "just another rock band" - that's special indeed...

D/L Stinking Lizaveta - Hopelessness & Shame right here.

*(Re-Upped 05.29.2008)*

Now playing:
The Goslings - Haruspex
via FoxyTunes

LAUGHING HYENAS.

Dirty blues-punk from the over-educated-and expensive-to-live-there-now town of Ann Arbor, MI.
If ever there was a tumultuous band, it would be these folks. Plenty of line-up changes over the years, as well as a change in sound towards the end, here's their first record, complete with a few bonus tracks including what may be their greatest (and truest) opus - "Don't Bogue My High".

Laughing Hyenas - Merry Go Round

OLD GRANDAD.

A (hirsute) staple of the (metal) streets of San Francisco for a good long time, here's a truly solid effort into drug-addled beard-metal!

DEAD KENNEDYS.

While the DK's were one of those "gateway" bands for me early on in my teenaged punker years, I found myself listening to them less and less after "Plastic Surgey Disasters".
Not that I don't still like them, but I think I'd like them better the less I heard / knew about Jello Biafra. Forcing people's politics down other peoples' throats - whether it be about the government OR your band - is a turn off.
Anyways, that's just my opinion - form your own.
Here's a great demo of what I consider to be a "classic" hardcore record.
